Mark and John Lake farm together between Alexandria and Paterson in the Eastern Cape. The Springbuck run on the farm Cuton Park in the Paterson District. They occur naturally and have in no way been manipulated to look the way that they do. This area was in the old days known as ‘Quaggasvlakte’ which is situated on the old wagon trails to the North where early settlers noted plains ‘teeming with Springbuck’. Interestingly this was where the first sighting of Springbuck was made in 1752 by wagon driver August Beutler. This is also the area where the first sighting of white springbuck was made in 1804. This area has a high tick burden, the springbuck are therefore heartwater springbuck.
We sold our first Coffee Springbok in 2013 to Johan and Nadien Bosch of Dinaka in the Limpopo Province where the buck have adapted well to their new surroundings. We have also sent Coffee rams to the Kalahari where they are also doing well. The Coffees have been well received by the industry and have been bought by some of the most well known and established game breeders. We envisage the Coffee Springbok becoming one of the most popular and sought after of breeds.
